Meet Your Farmers at Pleasant Shade Farm
Pasture-Raised Meats, Just a Short Drive from Franklin, TN
About Us
We’re Matt and Kate, and along with our kids Eve (6) and Beau (4), we run Pleasant Shade Farm—a small family farm tucked into the hills of Tennessee.
The farm has been in Matt’s life since he was twelve years old, spending weekends here with his grandparents and learning the ropes through muddy boots and hard work.
In 2014, he had the chance to purchase the farm and carry on what they started. Over the years, the land has been home to horses, pigs, goats, cows, and chickens—and it’s still growing and changing with us.
Kate moved to Tennessee from the Midwest back in 2008, and together we’ve built a life around family, community, and a desire to raise animals the right way. Most weekends, you’ll find Matt and Beau out in the pastures moving animals and fixing fences, while Kate and Eve connect with neighbors and customers—delivering orders, catching up at the market, or sharing the latest from the farm online.
Why We Farm
What started as a mission to feed our family high-quality, ethically raised food has grown into something more. We believe farming should be sustainable—for the animals, the soil, and the people.
That means working with the land, not against it. It means raising animals with care, letting them live as they were meant to, and making sure the food we offer is food we’re proud to feed our own children.
We use rotational grazing to give our animals fresh pasture regularly, which keeps them healthy and keeps the land thriving. Our cows graze down the grasses, then chickens follow behind to forage, scratch, and fertilize the soil naturally. It’s a simple rhythm—but it works, and it lasts.
We also source our Non-GMO supplemental feed from a small, local mill that’s been around since the 1930s. That means fresher, more nutritious food for our animals—and in turn, for you.
A Farm Built on Community
Everything we do comes back to taking care of people. Whether it’s chatting with someone at the market, dropping off a box of eggs to a new customer, or sending out a recipe, we’re grateful for the chance to share what we grow with others.
Matt handles the behind-the-scenes work—herding animals, building fences, and making sure the water flows (it does, year-round, from a natural spring). Kate takes care of customer communications, social media, and making sure everything runs smoothly on the front end.
Together, we’re raising food, raising kids, and building something we hope lasts long after our time.
Thanks for stopping by and being part of the story.
